Ingredients for this Longhorn Steakhouse mashed potatoes recipe

Here are the ingredients you will need to make the best mashed potatoes. Scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page for the detailed ingredient measurements.

    • Russet Potatoes: are the ideal base for this recipe because they’re starchy and fluffy. Peel and cube them.
    • Garlic Cloves: adds a savory depth of flavor that elevates the taste of the mashed potatoes to restaurant quality. Peel and mince them.
    • Unsalted Butter: provides richness while enhancing the overall flavor. Save a little softened butter for topping when you serve your mashed potatoes.
    • Heavy Cream: adds a luxurious creaminess and helps achieve the perfect soft and smooth consistency.
    • Sour Cream: brings a tangy, creamy element that balances the richness.
    • Salt: enhances all the other ingredients, ensuring the flavors are well-rounded and not bland.
    • Freshly Ground Black Pepper: adds a spice that complements the creaminess of the potatoes.
    • Fresh Parsley or Chives: provide a pop of color and a hint of freshness.

How to make this easy mashed potatoes recipe

This is how you can make homemade mashed potatoes. Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card at the end of this post for the cooking time and full step-by-step instructions!

    1. Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and fill it with cold water until fully submerged. Add a pinch of salt to season the water.
    2. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Cook until the large chunks are fork tender, this can take about 20-25 minutes.
    3. While the potatoes cook, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook until it becomes aromatic. Be careful not to let the garlic brown. Remove from the heat and set aside.
    4. Once the potatoes are done, drain excess water and return them to the pot. Let them sit for a minute or two to allow any remaining steam to escape.
    5. Use a potato masher or ricer to mash the potatoes until they reach a smooth consistency. Pour in the garlic butter, heavy cream, sour cream, salt, and black pepper. Stir well, adding more cream as needed to achieve your preferred texture. Mix until the potatoes are soft, creamy, and thoroughly combined.
    6. Spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving dish and top with an extra pat of butter for richness. Sprinkle with paprika or garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives for a pop of color and flavor. Enjoy!

Longhorn Steakhouse mashed potato recipe Tips and Tricks

    • Fresh Ingredients: Make sure to use fresh ingredients like raw garlic, fresh herbs, and freshly cracked whole black pepper for the best flavor.
    • Start with Cold Water: When boiling the potatoes, always place them in cold water and bring it to a boil. This ensures even cooking and prevents the outside from overcooking while the inside remains underdone.
    • Season Gradually: Add salt and pepper in small increments, tasting as you go.
    • Mash Smartly: Avoid using a hand mixer, as it can overwork the starch, resulting in a gummy texture.

    Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

Can I use a different type of potato for this recipe?

Of course! Russet potatoes are ideal for mashed potatoes due to their starchy texture. But Yukon Gold potatoes are also a great option if you prefer a creamier, buttery texture. Red potatoes aren’t ideal for because of their waxy texture and lower starch content. This means they don’t break down as quickly when mashed, resulting in a denser, chunkier consistency

Do I have to peel the potatoes?

Peeling is recommended for a smoother texture, but you can leave the skins on if you enjoy a more rustic feel. Just be sure to scrub them thoroughly before cooking.

Can I add extra flavors to the mashed potatoes?

Definitely! You have a plethora of options for flavor additions. The first few that come to mind are:

    • Shredded cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese.
    • Whole bulb roasted garlic, chopped green onions,  or bacon bits.
    • Boil your potatoes in chicken broth instead of water for added flavor.

How do I know when the potatoes are cooked?

The Longhorn Steakhouse Mashed Potatoes are ready when a fork slides easily into a cube without resistance. Avoid overcooking.

    How do I store leftovers?

Place your leftovers in an airtight container and place them in the fridge. They should last for at least 3 or 4 days. Or you can freeze them for a month or two.

How do I reheat frozen mashed potatoes?

You can reheat them in a microwave, stovetop, or oven. Just add a splash of milk or butter to restore their texture. Stir frequently in intervals and heat until warmed through.
