Of all of the cornbread mixes, I have found that the Krusteaz mix is my favorite. It changes up your traditional cornbread by adding sweet honey and is a family favorite in my house.

It is so easy to make, and you only need four ingredients. This recipe is an excellent option for your next outdoor BBQ or holiday potluck.

If you're wondering what is a good side item to pair your cornbread with, be sure to try out Red Lobster Brussel Sprouts or even this creamy slow cooker white chicken chili recipe.

Scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page for detailed ingredient measurements.

Krusteaz Honey Cornbread & Muffin Mix: is sweet, cakey, and super easy to make. Follow the instructions on the back of the box for the best cornbread.  Of course you can use any Krusteaz Cornbread you prefer.
Vegetable Oil: is added to your cornbread to keep it nice and moist.
Milk: helps with consistency. It thins out the cornbread batter, making pouring into the baking pan easy.
Egg: helps with binding all of the ingredients together.
Optional Add-Ins: You can change up this recipe by adding in fresh corn kernels, cheddar cheese, or jalapeño peppers.

How to Make this Krusteaz Cornbread Recipe

Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page for full step-by-step instructions!

    1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
    2. In a large bowl, combine the Krusteaz Cornbread Mix, vegetable oil (or melted butter), milk, and egg. Stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.
    3. If desired, fold in optional add-ins such as corn kernels, shredded cheddar cheese, or chopped jalapeño.
    4. Pour your batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-28 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    6. Allow the cornbread to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into squares and serve.

Can I Turn This Recipe into Muffins?

Of course, and it is super easy. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and add your batter to your muffin cups. Then, place your muffins into the oven for about 16 minutes, keeping an eye on them and taking them out once the tops turn golden brown.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to spray your muffin pan before adding in the batter.

Flavor Variations of the Krusteaz Cornbread Recipe

Cheese. Adding some cheddar cheese is by far one of my favorite things to add to my cornbread. You can also add in jalapeños for a cheesy jalapeño cornbread.

Jalapeños. Wanting some spice? Add in jalapeños. I like to stir mine into the mix so that it is combined throughout the cornbread batter.

Corn. Because of course you can add fresh corn kernels into your cornbread. This will give it a delicious southern feel.

Is There a Difference Between Southern Cornbread and Northern Cornbread?

Yes! While cornbread is the base of the recipes, there are a few things that make them different:

Northern: Northern cornbread is a bit sweeter than the cornbread in the south. It will usually contain some kind of sugar, like molasses. Another difference is that cornbread in the north is a bit lighter and has a cake-like consistency. It is also made in a pan, like an 8x8 pan, instead of a cast iron skillet. This keeps the edges from becoming crispy.

Southern: Southern cornbread is more savory than sweet, unlike northern cornbread. Southern cornbread is usually made without adding extra sugar, is crumbly, flat, and has a crispy outside crust. The key to the crunchy crust is to use a cast iron skillet to cook your bread in. It is very common to add jalapeños or corn to the mix.

What Do I Serve with My Homemade Cornbread?

Cornbread is an amazing side dish to so many different savory dishes. Think of things like chili, soups, stews or as a delicious side for the holidays. Cornbread is really great at sopping up any leftovers in your bowl.

How Do I Store My Cornbread?

There are many ways to store leftover cornbread. You can cover it and put it on the counter for two days. Place it, covered, in the fridge for a week. It can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to three months.

When you take your cornbread out of the freezer, allow it to thaw at room temperature. You’re welcome to eat it at room temperature or place it in the oven at 350 degrees F until heated all the way through. You can also warm your bread in the microwave, but it will need to be cut into pieces so that it gets completely warm.
