    What Is KFC Sauce?

KFC sauce is a creamy, tangy dipping sauce served at Kentucky Fried Chicken. It’s known for its slightly sweet flavor, mild smokiness, and smooth texture that pairs perfectly with fried chicken, fries, and chicken sandwiches.

While the exact recipe from KFC isn’t public, the flavor comes from a combination of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, and seasonings. The balance of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors makes it similar to other popular fast-food sauces like Chick-fil-A sauce, but with a more tomato-forward taste.

This homemade version recreates that signature flavor using simple pantry ingredients so you can enjoy KFC sauce anytime at home.

What Is KFC Sauce Made Of?

Most copycat versions of KFC sauce use a base of mayonnaise combined with ketchup and mustard for flavor and color.

    Typical ingredients include:

    • mayonnaise
    • ketchup
    • mustard
    • vinegar
    • pickle juice
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • garlic powder
    • paprika
    • sugar

These ingredients create the creamy texture and tangy flavor that makes KFC sauce so addictive.

Ingredients for Copycat KFC Sauce Recipe

    Ingredients on the counter
    • Mayonnaise: helps with consistency and flavor. Mayo helps your sauce hit the right creamy texture while turning down the spice a little.
    • Ketchup: adds a tangy and sweet flavor to your KFC special sauce. It also helps with the red tint of your sauce.
    • Mustard: adds a bit of a sweet, spicy, and bitter taste to your sauce. If you like a spicy sauce, feel free to add Dijon mustard instead of classic yellow mustard.
    • White Onion: you can either finely mince your onions or use onion juice, which is what I recommend. Onion juice doesn’t allow any chunks of onion to get into the sauce.
    • White Vinegar: is used to add an acidy tang to your sauce.
    • Dill Pickle Juice: pairs well with the white vinegar by adding an herby tang to your KFC dip.
    • Granulated Sugar: combines with the acidy, tangy, and spicy flavors to mellow them out and create a balanced sauce.
    • Worcestershire Sauce: adds an umami flavor to your recipe, which is the secret to this recipe!
    • Paprika: adds a delicious sweet and peppery taste. You can add in smoked paprika if you’d like to add a bit of smokiness and change up the recipe just a little.
    • Garlic Powder: I prefer to use powder in this recipe because it is easier to mix together and combine all of the ingredients without one sticking out.
    • Mustard Powder: Surprisingly, mustard powder doesn’t have too much of a bold flavor, it is more mellow and pairs well with the other ingredients.
    • Salt: enhances the flavors in your KFC sauce.
    • Black Pepper: adds a warm spice flavor to your sauce.

    Pro Tips

    • Onion juice can be difficult to find at grocery stores. To make your own, puree an onion wedge in a blender. Place in a fine sieve lined with cheesecloth over a bowl and use a sturdy spatula to press the juices into the sieve.
    • To perfectly mesh all of your ingredients together, be sure to let your sauce chill in your fridge for at least 20-30 minutes after making it so that the flavors can combine, and it will also help your sauce thicken up just a little.

    Flavor Variations

There are so many ways to change up the best KFC sauce. Here are some of my favorite ways to make a small change without losing the delicious flavor of this sauce.

    • Change out the vinegar. If you’re not the biggest fan of the vinegar taste or smell. Plus, adding a little lemon adds freshness to the recipe.
    • Add some spice. To add a little bit of heat, mix in a little of your favorite hot sauce, like Tabasco or Sriracha.
    • Add some sweetness. For more of a sweet sauce, add brown sugar, sweet honey, or a dash of maple syrup.
    • Add a peppery flavor. If you’re looking for more of a peppery flavor, I would mix in some Dijon mustard or swap yellow mustard out for Dijon mustard.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is KFC Sauce the Same as Chick-fil-A Sauce?

KFC sauce and Chick-fil-A sauce are similar but not identical. Chick-fil-A sauce has a stronger honey mustard and barbecue flavor, while KFC sauce tends to be more tomato-forward with a mild tang from vinegar and pickle juice. Both sauces are creamy and slightly sweet, which makes them great for dipping fried chicken and fries.

How can I store my leftover KFC sauce?

This finger lickin’ good sauce is great to make now and use later. It can last in an airtight container or mason jar in the fridge for up to three or four days. This is a tangy sauce is great to make on a busy weeknight or to make for your weekly meal prep.

    Can you freeze KFC sauce?

I do not recommend freezing your leftover KFC sauce. This sauce contains a few ingredients, like mayo, that don’t freeze well. If you’d like to freeze it, place it in an airtight container for up to a month and then let it thaw until room temperature to use.

You talk about onion juice in the note, but it's not in the ingredients?

It's an "either-or" scenario. You can used finely minced onion, but creating and using the onion's juice is more labor intensive but slightly more preferable because it will be smooth instead of chunky.
