If you love the chocolatey chip Frappuccino but don’t want to make a Starbucks run every time the craving hits, this easy homemade version is smooth, rich, and perfectly sweet.

I’ll show you exactly how to make a double chocolate chip Frappuccino, plus ingredient swaps and how to turn it into a Java Chip version with coffee.

What Is a Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino at Starbucks?

The Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino is a cream-based frozen drink from Starbucks. Unlike coffee-based Frappuccinos, this one contains no coffee. It’s made with milk, chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, ice, and whipped cream, then blended until smooth and topped with more chocolate drizzle.

It’s sometimes called the Chocolatey Chip Frappuccino on updated Starbucks menus.

Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino Ingredient List

    This drink is made with:

    • Milk
    • Mini chocolate chips
    • Chocolate syrup
    • Sugar
    • Ice
    • Vanilla
    • Xanthan gum (for texture)

Ingredients Breakdown for a Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino

    • Milk: to get the best consistency for this drink, I like to use either whole milk or 2% milk. If you’re looking for something a little thinner, you can use nonfat milk or any plant-based milk. I have found that almond or coconut milk is the best non-dairy milk for a Frappuccino.
    • Mini Chocolate Chips: are the secret ingredient to this recipe. You will want tiny pieces of chocolate in your Frappuccino, not big chunks, aka mini chips. You can use a powerful blender with regular-sized chocolate chips and still have too big of chocolate pieces. If you can’t find mini chips anywhere, add chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips to a Ziploc bag and hit them a few times for them to crumble. You just want your pieces small enough to fit through your straw.
    • Chocolate Syrup: is added to your drink for an extra chocolate flavor and to give you that classic double chocolate chip Frappuccino color. You will also want to save some to use as a garnish at the end. Feel free to make your own chocolate syrup using unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and water.
    • Sugar: is going to be the best kind of sweetener to use in this recipe. You can also substitute granulated sugar for Stevia, honey, or agave nectar.
    • Xanthan Gum: is the emulsifying agent or thickener. Using xanthan gum is what keeps your drink the perfect consistency.
    • Ice: cubes or crushed ice, either one works perfectly. If you’re planning on using coffee in your drink, it’s a good idea to pour your coffee into an ice cube tray, let it freeze, and then use it in your drink as ice.
    • Vanilla: adding vanilla to your chocolate frappuccino is 100% worth it; just trust me on this. It adds a yummy warm flavor to your drink.
    • Whipped Cream: is the best topping for any cold coffee drink. You can use the ready-made kind or easily make your own using a few ingredients and a milk frother.
    • Garnish: Top your drink with whipped cream, and chocolate drizzle, and add a few mini chocolate chips, and you have the perfect Frappuccino garnish.

Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino Tips and Tricks

Thinner Drink? Try using non-dairy milk or low-fat milk. Almond milk is a great plant-based alternative and gives you the classic chocolate chip Frappuccino flavor. A few others are oat milk or soy milk.

Thicker Drink? Add just a dash more xanthin gum, but don’t add too much. This can make your drink too thick.

Different Sweetener? Not a problem! Add honey, maple syrup, or Stevia instead of your white sugar.

Different Flavor? Try adding different flavored syrups for a twist on the original recipe, like peppermint. You can also top your drinks with different syrups like caramel, white chocolate, or butterscotch.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino Have Coffee In It?

Surprisingly, it does not! Starbucks classifies this as a “Crème Frappuccino,” meaning it contains no coffee or caffeine unless added. This makes Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccinos one of the best options for your kiddos.

Can I add coffee to my frappuccino?

Of course! If you need your caffeine fix, you can add a shot of espresso to your mix while blending to make a Java Chip Frappuccino. For all you coffee lovers, you can also use iced coffee! Don’t use coffee that isn’t cold, as this will make your drink warm and won't blend properly.

Can I make my own whipped cream?

Yes, and it’s much easier than you think! All you really need is a few ingredients and a milk frother.

For the perfect amount of whipped cream for this beverage, mix 1/8 tsp of vanilla, 2 tbsp of sugar, and 1/4 cup heavy cream into a small bowl or cup. Blend with your milk frother, and you have made your own homemade whipped cream!

Can I make this recipe in advance?

This is one of the Starbucks copycat recipes that I do not recommend making ahead of time. It will melt and lose all of its flavor. If you’re wanting to keep it cold for just a few extra minutes, place your glass into the freezer for around 30 minutes before pouring your Frappuccino in it.
