Combine warm milk and sugar in a stand mixer. Sprinkle yeast over the mixture, stir gently, and allow it to sit until it becomes frothy, mine took about 10 minutes.
1 cup warm milk, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
Mix in the flour with the salt, egg, melted butter and turn your stand mixer on low speed. Allow it to knead the dough for 5-10 minutes.
3 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 3 tbsp unsalted butter, 1 egg, 1 tsp salt
Put the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it sit in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
After the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Roll it out to about ½ inch thick, and cut it into small squares (about 2x2 inches). You can get anywhere between 12 and 16 buns depending on how you cut them. Place them on a greased baking sheet.
Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes until they puff up again.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
When the rolls come out of the oven, immediately brush them with melted butter for that signature taste. Serve warm and enjoy!
2 tbsp unsalted butter
